About Tamara
I’m Tamara Hendrix Campbell. Most people call me Tammy.
I am a licensed clinical social worker with 22 years of clinical experience and 17 years in private practice. I earned my master’s degree in clinical social work from Florida State University, where my training laid the foundation for my work as a psychotherapist. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology, which continues to shape my interest in relationships, family systems, culture, identity, and the meanings people create together.
My postgraduate education includes doctoral-level study at the Institute for Clinical Social Work, where I studied psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theory and completed a year of analytically oriented clinical supervision. I am currently in a nine-month certificate program in Integrative Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy through ICSW.
My work with couples is active, relational, and direct. I pay close attention to the unconscious patterns that develop between partners: the roles each person takes up, the expectations and fears carried from earlier relationships, and the cycles that can leave both people feeling misunderstood, defended, or alone.
I am passionately engaged, emotionally present, and willing to speak honestly about what I notice. I attend closely to what unfolds between partners and within the therapeutic relationship, including my own internal responses, which I hold carefully as possible sources of clinical information. The aim is not simply to improve communication, but to understand and shift the deeper relational patterns that keep a couple stuck.
My Approach
Contemporary relational psychoanalytic theory provides the organizing foundation of my work with couples. It offers a way of understanding the unconscious patterns, early relational experiences, internal conflicts, and defenses that each partner brings into the relationship, as well as the patterns the couple creates together.
The relationship between partners is central to the work. Rather than focusing only on each person individually, I pay close attention to what develops between you: the roles you take up, the expectations you carry, the ways you protect yourselves, and the cycles that can become difficult to see from inside the relationship. These patterns also emerge in the therapy room, where they can be understood and experienced differently.
I integrate somatic techniques and parts-based language to support deeper psychoanalytic work. These approaches can help partners stay present with difficult emotional material, recognize defensive reactions as they arise, and understand the internal conflicts that shape what happens between them, while respecting the needs and limits of each person’s nervous system.
